The Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar has been instituted by the Ministry of Education, Central Government to recognize, inspire and celebrate excellence in sanitation and hygiene practice in schools. The purpose of the SVP is to honor schools that have undertaken significant steps towards fulfilling the mandate of the Swachh Vidyalaya Campaign. SVP is based on IT enabled assessment of WASH infrastructure, hygienic practices and COVID-19 appropriate behaviour. About Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar 2021-2022
Subhas Sarkar, Minister of State for Education virtually launched the Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar (SVP) 2021-22. The award will recognise, inspire and award the schools who have undertaken exemplary work in the field of water, sanitation, and hygiene. SVP also provides a benchmark and roadmap for schools to make further improvements in the future. Interested schools can apply by March 2022.

Categories of Awards in Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar
The awards are categorized at the District level, State and National level. At the national level, 40 schools will be selected for awards this year under the overall category. Selected schools will be awarded Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 60,000 per school under Samagra Shiksha scheme. There will be six sub-category-wise awards with award money of Rs. 20,000 per school. The sub-categories include water, sanitation, handwashing with soap, operation and maintenance, behaviour change and capacity building, and the newly added category on COVID-19 preparedness and response.

Dates to Apply Online for Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar
- Online submission of applications by the schools – January to March 2022
- Selection of schools for the awards at the district level – 1st April to 15th May 2022
- Submission of results for the State/UT level awards – Till 22nd May 2022
- Selection of schools for State/UT level awards – 22nd May to 30th June 2022
- Submission of results for the national level awards – 1st July to 7th July 2022
- Cross validation at national level – 7th July to 7th September 2022
- Tentative date for the national level award ceremony – 15th October 2022 (Global Hand Washing Day)
Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar 2021-22 Registration & Login
All Government, Government aided and private schools from both rural and urban areas are invited to apply for the Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar. The registration of schools would be done with the UDISE+ code of the school *. Schools will first complete the primary information section in the prescribed format and submit.

Assessment of Schools in Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar
The SVP 2021-22 is open to all categories of schools – government, government-aided and private schools across the country. The schools will be assessed through an online portal and mobile app in the six above-mentioned sub-categories and the system will generate the overall score and rating automatically.
Rating System for Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar
Schools will be awarded at the district, state, and national level based on an internationally recognized five-star rating system. Every school will get a certificate of participation showing the category-wise scores and overall rating of the school. This will help in promoting sustainable practices of improved water, sanitation and hygiene in schools. In order to create self-motivation and awareness about sanitation the Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar (SVP) was first instituted by the department of school education and literacy, in 2016-17, the official notice read.
Swachh Vidyalaya Parameters
Performance level based on the Compliance to the Swachh Vidyalaya parameters:-
Score
- Excellent, Keep it Up – 90% to 100% of the Norms
- Very Good – 75% to 89% adherence to the Norms
- Good but there is scope for Improvement – 51% to 74% adherence to the Norms
- Fair, Needs Improvement – 35% to 50% adherence to Norms
- Poor, Needs considerable Improvement – Below 35% adherence to Norms
Need for Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar
While launching the awards, Sarkar highlighted the importance of water, sanitation, and hygiene in schools as it plays a significant role in determining the health of students, their attendance, dropout rate, and learning outcomes. The provision of water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities in schools secures a healthy school environment and protects children from illness (including COVID-19) and exclusion, he said.
Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya Initiative
Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya is the national campaign driving ‘Clean India: Clean Schools’. A key feature of the campaign is to ensure that every school in India has a set of functioning and well maintained water, sanitation and hygiene facilities. Water, sanitation and hygiene in schools refers to a combination of technical and human development components that are necessary to produce a healthy school environment and to develop or support appropriate health and hygiene behaviours.
The technical components include drinking water, hand washing, toilet and soap facilities in the school compound for use by children and teachers. The human development components are the activities that promote conditions within the school and the practices of children that help to prevent water, hygiene and sanitation related diseases.

Background of Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya (SBSV)
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in schools play a significant role in determining the health of children, attendance, dropout rate and learning outcomes. The provision of water, sanitation and hygiene facilities in school secures a healthy school environment and protects children from illness (including COVID-19) and exclusion. It is a first step towards a healthy physical learning environment, benefiting both learning and health.
